11 students to study medicine & health fields in Fiji

Students who have been selected to study medicine at the former Fiji School of Medicine now known as the Fiji National University were officially presented their scholarship awards at a ceremony hosted by LBJ Hospital at Goat Island Café this afternoon.

The recipients are Nerisa Leaumoana-Faumuina and Noelle Frances Garcia Niedo who are pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Those pursuing a Doctor in Medicine and Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery are Scott Anesi, Ipo Hemaloto, Brownie Tuiasosopo, Kimberly Lutu-Fuiava, Helen Jessop Folau and Easter Asi-Bruce. LBJ scholarships Scott.1

June Salesa Vaifanua-Leo is the World Health Organization (WHO)’s scholarship recipient pursuing a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree.

LBJ sponsored employees pursuing a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science are Barbara Mafua and Tapakea Tufono.

Governor Lolo Moliga expressed his appreciation to the Fono leaders for approving without question funding for the medical scholarships.

He hopes that this will be only the first batch of local students to be sent to Fiji for medical training, and many more locals will become physicians and other health care employees.

Present at the luncheon were LBJ CEO Taufete’e John Faumuina, chairman of the House Health CommitLBJ scholarships Niedotee, Rep. Vesi Talalelei Fautanu, Rep. Faimealelei Allen, a member of the Hospital Authority Board, Filifa’atali Mike Fuiava, Chairman of the Hospital Authority Board and Health Director, Motusa Tuileama Nua.

Also attending the ceremony were Dr. Annie Fuavai, Dr. Seakerise Tuato’o and Dr. Tufa who are graduates of the Fiji School of Medicine , as well as several other hospital administrators.
