There’s a surge in Zika cases as wet and rainy weather sets in.

Health authorities are stressing that during the Christmas and New Year Holidays, when families gather to celebrate and hold outdoor activities, prevention against mosquitoes becomes very important.

As of December 22, the number of suspected Zika cases has reached 1030,

There are now 61 confirmed Zika cases, confirmed through laboratory testing in Hawaii, 27 of the confirmed cases are pregnant women.

Symptoms of Zika include a fever, a rash, and conjunctivitis or reddening of the eyes.

The big worry with Zika is its effect on babies born to mothers who contract Zika while pregnant.

Studies have found that some babies have microzephaly which is a smaller than usual head.

The Health Department and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to monitor babies in the territory whose mothers caught Zika  while they were carrying.
