The offer by StarKist to pay for the assessment of the locally based US longline fleet to obtain MSC certification may be the turn around point for members of the Tautai o Samoa Longline and Fishing Association.

The MSC certification is a label that shows the fishing vessel uses sustainable fishing practices which ensures the continued long term viability of fish stocks.

Starkist is paying for the certification assessment of members of the Tautai o Samoa Longline and Fishing Association.

The assessment started this month and is to be completed in August of next year.

The locally based long line fleet numbers just under 20 vessels.

We asked Tautai Association President Christina Lutu Sanchez how important MSC certification is to the local US longline fleet.
