The driver of a pick up truck which crashed in to the training room of the Department of Youth And Women Affairs Center early this morning told police he slept at the wheel.
The vehicle was a taxi and the driver, an assistant pastor, was taking passengers to the cannery.
According to information from police, the driver said that he must’ve nodded off and was jolted fro his sleep when he hit the gate of the DYWA center.
He said he slammed onto the brakes but instead he was accelerating and his truck landed in the middle of the training room.
Several pieces of equipment were damaged, and the floor of the training room was covered with bits of cement and glass.
There was no one onside the room at the time of the accident, between 5:30 and 6:00 this morning.
Those who have seen the damage have called into question why there were no rebars or fortification which would have helped stop the vehicle when it hit the back wall of the building.
The training room for DYWA is closed for a couple of days until its been cleaned up.
