Customers of the government bank, the Territorial Bank of American Samoa, are still waiting for TBAS to get a routing number which is essential for direct deposits to be made to their accounts.

The routing number is associated with a checking, savings, or other bank account that links a financial institution with the account.

It’s used to determine where to route funds to or from. Anyone seeking a direct deposit from a company will typically have to provide a routing and account number.TBAS-Opening-utu-215x150

The chairman of the Board of TBAS Utu Abe Malae said in response to our enquiries that the TBAS CEO Mr. Phil Ware is currently following up with Federal Reserve Bank in Washington D.C. for the bank’s transit routing number.

Utu said obtaining their routing number is taking longer than expected but they are pleased that the staff of Congresswoman Aumua Amata and Senator Orin Hatch of Utah are helping out..

The TBAS board chairman explained that the bank is in an unusual situation that the Fed is trying to place TBAS in the right cubbyhole

He told KHJ News the Fed wants to make sure there is minimum government interference in the bank.

Utu points out that there are other functions of TBAS that are not dependent on a transit routing number.

TBAS opened its doors on October 4.
