Five Senators Confirmed for 35th Legislature

Five of the 18 senatorial seats have been selected at county and district meetings over the last two weeks.

The Office of Samoan Affairs has been verbally informed of the selections made so far and expects all of the county chiefs to provide written certification to satisfy requirements of the law.

The Senate seat for Leloaloa, Lepua and Aua however is up in the air after a county meeting last week and a Mauputasi District discussion yesterday.

Aua High Chief Tilo has expressed a desire to be the new senator in the 35th Legislature.

However incumbent Senator Uti Petelo is taking the position that the senator should be from a top tier chiefly ranking.

The discussion at yesterday’s meeting of the District resolved that Leloaloa , Lepua and Aua come up with a consensus and another meeting will be held Wednesday.

Other senators already confirmed to be in the Senate chamber January 3, 2017 are Gaoteote Palaie for Vaifanua, Tuaolo Fruean for Pago Pago, Fano Shmasaki for Fagatogo, Utulei And Pago Pago and Levu Tula Solaita and Alo Faauuga for Ituau.
