The refusal by the US Army Corps of Engineers to provide further funding to mitigate against contamination caused by fuel seepage in Aua has been labeled as an environmental injustice.

That’s how Chief Engineer of the Waste Water Division of the American Samoa Power Authority Jason Jaskoviak is reacting to the US military’s rejection of additional funding to clean up contamination linked to the US Navy.

Jaskoviak said on the Samoa Sunrise Show that the US Navy had fuel tanks in Aua and when the Navy left, it did not clean up the fuel contamination  which is still evident today.

ASPA made a case that the US military should pay costs associated with utility infrastructure in Aua such as sewer lines and water lines, but was turned down.

Jaskoviak said this refusal means American Samoa will bear the additional costs because of the mess that the Navy left behind.
