The first extensive exploration of what lies undersea in American Samoa’s Exclusive Economic Zone is part of a Pacific deep sea exploration by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the first quarter of 2017.
This will be part of a three year campaign by NOAA to learn more about the depths of the ocean in the Pacific.
The exploration will be conducted on the NOAA vessel Okeanos Explorer from January to April next year.
David McKinnier is the senior advisor of the NOAA Ocean exploration.
The American Samoa National Marine Sanctuary is coordinating the NOAA ocean exploration in surrounding waters and there will be opportunity for teachers and students to be part of the mission.
You can find out more from Outreach Coordinator for the Sanctuary, Apulu Veronika Mortenson at 633-6500.
