With the uncertainty of the Samoa Tuna Processors cannery, the breadfruit industry is being touted as a potential source for jobs.

Swains Island faipule, Su’a Alex Jennings  has been making breadfruit flour and experimenting with different products made from it.

He’s excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.

One of the attractions of breadfruit flour is that it is gluten free.

Breadfruit flour is being milled at Su’a’s residential compound in Pavaiai where equipment has been set up.

According to the Swains faipule their work on the breadfruit is attracting a lot of interest not only from other Pacific islands but other parts of the world.

Tomorrow some of the products made from breadfruit will be on display at a meeting at Le Taalolo Lodge at the Iliili Golf Course, with the Director of the Pacific Business Center, University of Hawaii, Papalii Dr. Failautusi Avegalio who has been pushing research and development for the breadfruit or ulu project for the last decade.

Rep Su’a said they hope to solidify US Department of Agriculture approval for commercial manufacture of ulu flour in the territory.
