Pese Lotu the Focus of 3rd Annual Ethnomusicology Forum

The 3rd Annual Ethnomusicology Forum at the American Samoa Community College takes place from 9am to 12 Friday, November 4, at the ASCC lecture Hall.

Organized by the Fine Arts Department in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Samoana Jazz and Arts Festival, this year’s forum focuses on pese lotu…church music.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Larry Purcell, a composer and conductor, with presentations by Rev. Faatauvaa Talamoni of the CCCAS Pago Pago, a composer and pianist, Kuki Tuiasosopo, ethnomusicologist and chairman of the ASCC Fine Arts Department, and Professor of Music at ASCC, Poe Mageo.

Dr. Richard Moyle of the Center for Pacific Studies and Conservatorium of Music at Griffith University, Australia, who has done extensive research and has compiled a library of Samoan chants from Manu’a, Tutuila, Upolu and Savaii will also have a paper read by Loretta Leagatonu Pua’auli, Assistant Professor of Music at ASCC.

The public is invited to attend the forum from 9 am to noon.
