New Litter Law Sent to Governor for Signing

The administration’s litter bill has been forwarded to the governor for his signature.

It was the last piece of legislation to  come out of the final session of the 34th legislature before it ended last Friday.

The House approved the Senate version of the bill which included an amendment.

Senators added the Office of Samoan Affairs as one of the 7 agencies with authority to issue citations for littering under the new law.

The original bill had six agencies as having enforcement power: Environmental Protection Agency,  American Samoa Power Authority, Department of Health,  Marine and Wildlife Resources, Parks and Recreation, and Public Safety,.

Fines for littering in the bill range from $50 for a first offence to $1,000 for a 4th offense.
