Another inmate was in court today for escaping from the Tafuna Correctional Facility

Joeita Faaliga, charged with felony escape and multiple counts of stealing, was a gate trustee at the TCF back in April , when he escaped.

While on the lam, the defendant stole a purse belonging to a woman inside a vehicle that was parked at the ASPA office in Tafuna, while her husband was inside paying their utility bill.

On the same evening he stole from a store in the vicinity then took off when he saw a police unit, ran through a nearby auto shop and headed back to the TCF.

When asked why he did it, the defendant responded in court that he was really hungry.

The defendant waived his right to a preliminary examination in District Court this morning and was bound over to the High Court for his arraignment tomorrow morning.

Faaaliga joins a number of inmates who have escaped from TCF under the current warden.

Another defendant Joe Togitogi, was also in court yesterday for felony escape.

He too said that he escaped to find food because he was hungry.

Reports from prison staff say due to limited funding inmates sometimes have only one meal a day,
