Two candidates running for governor favor the current method of selecting senators while the third said it’s time to elect senators.
This was the one question that both lt governor and governor candidates had to answer at the American Samoa Bar Association Gubernatorial Forum last Thursday.
At present, senators are selected through the tradition of consensus by ranking chiefs and orators of districts.
Governor Lolo Moliga said the present method has withstood the test of time and he believes cultural and religious values are two facets of the Samoan way of life that cannot be separated from the government.
