Nuanua Iuli was among 57,000 students from around the globe who applied for the Bill Gates Millennium Scholars Program.

And she’s among the 1000 awarded a scholarship from the Microsoft billionaire.

Nuanua is the daughter of Fa’aalu Iuli & Tialuga Vince Iuli of Leone.

The Samoana High School graduate is a freshman at St. John’s University in Queens, New York i

Her father, the Deputy Director of KVZK-TV Tialuga, explains to KHJ News how truly proud he is of his daughter’s huge achievement. That it was no easy feat!

He said, “As a parent, I am very proud of my Nuanua!  So, it is our prayer that she represents our island and home well and to take this higher education blessing to a newer and higher level for American Samoa.”

KHJ News was unable to reach Nuanua for more information because she was preoccupied with a Leadership Conference and is going through orientation for her school.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program, is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

It was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest.

Congrats Nuanua and good luck on all your endeavors.
