There was praise from the Public Defender for the approach taken by the Attorney General’s Office in handling criminal cases.

Public Defender Douglas Fiaui says this year has seen a dramatic drop in the number of criminal cases filed.

Their office recorded between 50 and 60 criminal cases filed by the AG’s Office so far since the start of 2016, compared to 260 in 2013.

He said last year there were 22 cases filed.

Fiaui told a House hearing that the AG’s Office is being more selective and prosecuting only cases which can be proven in court.
