New Detention Facility Will Hold 114 Inmates

In response to the growing population at the Territorial Correctional Facility, the government will officially open this Thursday a new detention facility which will house a maximum of 114 inmates.

Commissioner of Public Safety Save Liuato Tuitele explained that all inmates and pre trial detainees will be moved to the new facility except for those who are under the substance abuse rehabilitation program.

The old building will be utilized as a trades facility to teach inmates different trades such as carpentry, mechanics, and electrical to name a few.

Save said he solidified this plan when he became commissioner and halted TCF’s work release program.

He said the reason was because he saw hat there was no real control over  the program.

The way it was, people used the inmates to do their work and money which the inmates should have earned should have gone to Treasury to pay for these inmates’ bills.

Save said members of the public were seeing inmates driving around on their own and going places they were not supposed to while on work release.

This also posed a security concern.

Save said in his early days as commissioner, he put a stop to the work release program.

After revamping the program and putting in necessary controls Save said he’s re-opened the program with just two inmates strictly under the guidance of the TCF Warden.

There are several inmates with good trade skills, says the commissioner, and his wish is to see them improve their skills through ongoing training made available while serving their time.

There’s also a proposal being considered for TCF trades training with possible support from the private sector.
