No Citations Issued for Parking Space Violations

Commissioner of Public Safety, Save Liuato Tuitele, says police officers haven’t been issuing tickets to vehicles parked at spaces reserved for those with special needs.

He explained that this is because the court only honors tickets issued by police officers whose names are on the court’s list of certified officers.

Commissioner Save was testifying with Director of OPAD, the Office for the Protection and Advocacy for the Disabled, Peter Tinitali, on an administration bill to add OPAD to the list of agencies with authority to issue tickets to offenders.

The Commissioner related that the court dismissed a case because the police officer who issued the ticket to a driver who parked parking space marked for special needs vehicles. was not on the court’s list of those who are certified to do so.

Asked how long it would take for the department to have all the police officers certified to issue tickets, Save answered maybe two weeks.

Vice Speaker Fetu Fetui Jr.,  a former cop told his colleagues that he does not agree with OPAD issuing tickets to violators.
