The Senate is voting in final reading today on the administration bill to impose a fee for the use of scanners to detect everything that’s being imported through the port and airport.

The House has already approved the bill with a  reduction on the fees that were recommended by the government.

The Senate has also come up with its also fee schedule which is a bigger reduction on the proposed charges  than what the House approved.

  • For a 40 ft container the Senate wants to reduce the fee from $350 to $200;
  • From $250 to $150 for a container that’s less than 40 ft.
  • From $100 to 50 for inspection of loose cargo and
  • From $75 to $50 for inspection of vehicles and heavy equipment.

If the House doesn’t go along with the Senate’s changes, a conference committee will be called.
