ATM Scammers Make Initial Court Appearances

From Apia, the District Court has adjourned the case of two Chinese men accused of stealing money from the Bank South Pacific ATM machines at Vaitele and Matafele for prosecution to finalize charges.

Appearing in court for the first time today, the accused Yang Qingreen and Zhong Shuiming were caught by the bank’s security cameras allegedly using a mechanical device to access the money machines.

Prosecutor Muriel Lui told the court that there might be more charges against the accused hence the adjournment to the 26th September 2016.

Last week, the Acting Police Commissioner Afamasaga Michael So’onalole said the accused have only been in Samoa a month before the offence.

They are reported to have stolen at least $18,000 tālā from 2 ATM machines.

Police are working together with the Chinese Embassy in Samoa to return the third accused who has since gone back China.
