Samoa Manufacturers Run with Breadfruit Plan

There wasn’t much interest and support shown for the University of Hawaii’s idea of creating a new industry from the ulu or breadfruit.

But Samoa, through the Samoa Manufacturers Association or SAME  is already on the ball to get a piece of the publicized $15 billion market in the US for flour made from ulu.

Japan is also reported to have a similar size market.

The attraction is that ulu flour is gluten free.

SAME currently has a delegation attending the Breadfruit Festival in Hawaii.  ‘

Technical Adviser for the manufacturer’s group, Colin Stringer, said at the 2nd Pacific Agribusiness Forum in Apia, this new breadfruit market presents new opportunities for Samoan growers and manufacturers.
