Yesterday a notice was posted at the Veterinary clinic at the department of Agriculture compound which says “The Veterinary Clinic has been closed down until further notice. If you have any questions contact the Department of Agriculture at 699-9272.”

It was late yesterday when concerned members of the public contacted KHJ News about the closure and Director of Agriculture Lealao Mel Purcell could not be contacted, DOA veterinarian Kristen Jensen confirmed the closure.

She said she and the director had a disagreement on the handling of trapped dogs and the dog population in general.

Jensen explained their policy for dogs trapped on government or public property has been to hold them for 48 hours to give owners a chance to find and claim them.

“Healthy friendly dogs have been sterilized and adopted to families….sick, injured or aggressive dogs have been humanely euthanized,” said the vet.

She told KHJ News she was ordered to immediately euthanize several dogs trapped on the DOA compound despite the fact that I had homes waiting and willing to adopt these happy healthy dogs.

“I refused to euthanize them, and the director closed the clinic down.”
