Senate Passes Increase of Permanent Residents

The Senate today approved the administration bill to double the number of foreigners who have resided here 20 years and who can be made permanent resident each year.

The bill raises the quota of permanent residents approved each year from 50 to 100.

The vote was 12-0 and follows a hearing with Attorney General Talaueaga Eleasalo Ale yesterday.

While several senators recommended increasing the number by 200 or more, AG Talauega yesterday urged that the number be kept at 100 as proposed.

He said permanent residents can sponsor their spouses and children and he strongly advised that the senators proceed with caution to avoid a population problem.

Last week senators heard from Deputy AG Mitzie Jessop Taase that more than 600 applications for permanent residency were on the waiting list.
