The US Coast Guard Honolulu Sector is hosting a three member delegation from the Samoa Ministry of Works and Transport and Samoa Ports Authority.

Lt Commander Craig Petersen, who’s taking the group around with the head of the local Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Unit, Lt. Kevin Patrick Whalen, says the officials are  here to share best port security practices.

Their visit continues from a visit by the US Coast Guard to Samoa for the same purpose in January of last year.

The officials are Fepuleai Faleniu Alesana, head of the Maritime Division of the Ministry of Works and Transport, Magele Faamaini Vaa, head of  corporate services at the same ministry and Capt Solomona Levao of Samoa Ports Authority.

Fepuleai says security measures enforced here are about the same as in Samoa and the engagement with the Coast Guard and local authorities has been beneficial.

Yesterday the delegation observed the operations at the main dock , and today they were at the Samoa Tuna Processors cannery.

The next engagement between the US Coast Guard and Samoa will be hosted by Samoa in March of next year.

The group departs tomorrow.
