American Samoa has been awarded a grant of $82,851 from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for preventive health services.

The grant is from CDC’s Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support.

The money will be used to address basic health concerns such as tooth decay among children, food sanitation and injuries to older adults.

Other portions of the grant will be dedicated to emerging health threats and other prevention efforts in the area of skin cancer, child safety, and dental programs.

In announcing the grant,  Congresswoman Aumua Amata said, “Being small in size and isolated from any major land mass, funding plays a crucial role in the improvement to our islands healthcare system.”

She said, “This program will go a long way in safeguarding the health and welfare of residents.”

The congresswoman commended Project Director, Motusa Tuileama Nua and other local officials for doing their part in securing this funding.

She looks forward to “continuing to work towards building a healthier community and “to protect our people from existing and emerging health threats.”
