The SSV Robert C. Seamans is a sailing school vessel that is part of a much bigger institution that focuses on ocean geographic research, training undergraduates who major in marine science and related fields.
This fall semester is from August to November and the area of study is: Sustainability in Polynesian Island Cultures and Ecosystems.
Captain Pamela Coughlan says they’ve been working with the American Samoa Community College’s marine science instructor Kelly Tagarino, to get local students to join their educational voyages.
She explains that recruiting students from American Samoa has been hard because of the cost but they have had some success.
One of the local students who joined their voyage Johann Volrath has left a great impression on Captain Coughlan.
