Media Fraternity Loses Respected Journalist

For more than 5 years the voice on news from Samoa in Samoan heard on V103 Radio has been that of Merita Huch.

Sadly today we are mourning her untimely death.

Merita died yesterday morning at the age of 46 after a brief illness.

She was one of Samoa’s most respected journalists and at the time of her passing was News Manager for Samoa Quality Broadcasting’s TV1.

She has worked in radio, television and newspaper and did a short stint with Samoa News in 1991.

As a testament to the consummate journalist that she was, during the 2012 flooding in Samoa, Merita lost her home in Magiagi.

She missed just a few days providing our Tala mai Samoa, on V103 Radio.

But she was back on the job reporting with her distinct authoritative voice and impeccable Samoan in a jiff.

It was at that same time she lost a son who was traveling with a church youth group to New Zealand and drowned while on an outing.

Merita reported on his death without any signs of the personal grief she was experiencing.

She was from the old school of journalists, treat every story the same and one rule for everyone.

The loss of the media fraternity on the occasion of her passing cannot be compared to the void she leaves in the lives of her husband, James and their children.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time.

Here’s to you Merita. Happy reporting in the next life.
