Let the Rio Olympic Games Begin

The American Samoa flag was displayed at a side event for members of the Oceania delegations at the Rio Olympics, a prelude to the opening of the Games tonight.

This was the flag bearer naming ceremony which was held at UIrba Beach Point, an hour’s drive from the Games Village.

President of the American Samoa National Olympic Committee Victor Langkilde says our flag bearer is weightlifter Tanumafili Malietoa Jungblunt.

During the ceremony, daughters of our Chef de Mission Manu’a Chen, Angela and Emily performed the siva in front of the many people in attendance.

Langkilde says RIO Am Samoa groupthe American Samoa athletes also distributed bags and brochures provided by the American Samoa Visitors Bureau.

He says it was a good and very positive promotion of the beauty and culture of our people to add to the talents of our Olympic athletes.

Matai Akauola, who is Oceania National Olympic Committee’s Media Liaison reports that prayers were offered and after the ceremony the Rio rowing Club requested if the Oceania contingents could also pray for them and their canoes, which they willingly obliged as Pacific Islanders.

Tonight, our contingent steps into the limelight at the opening ceremony.

About the team, there are four athletes: Jordan Mageo and Isaac Siafau in athletics, Ben Waterhouse in Judo and Tanumafili Malietoa Jungblunt in weightlifting.Rio Mageo

The coaches are Valusia Talataina for athletics, Tomane Lopesi Fa’agu for weightlifting and Patrick Mahon for Judo.

The officials are Victor Langkilde, Manua Chen-Chef De mission, Henriette Molesi-ASNOC Office Manager, Ana Pite Assistant Manager, Pili Gaoteote for ASNOC interim Secretary General and his wife Ata as a guest.

Also traveling with the delegation at their own expense are the wife and three children of Mr. Chen.
