The US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention / CDC-NCBDDD National Center For Birth Defects & Developmental Disabilities has awarded the American Samoa Department of Health $400,000 in grant funding for Zika surveillance and monitoring in American Samoa.

Congresswoman Aumua Amata says this additional funding for Zika prevention through monitoring and surveillance will go a long way to helping eradicate this awful disease that has come to our home.

She looks forward to continuing to work with the CDC to ensure that Zika is eliminated as quickly as possible.

A press release from the congresswoman  says American Samoa has been one of the hardest hit regions of the U.S. states and territories with over 700 suspected cases.  Congressional action has been swift in allocating funding for Zika control and eradication, with more actions to follow.

The congresswoman thanks Scott Anesi with the American Samoa Department of Health and staff for helping obtain this additional funding.

She also expressed appreciation to officials at the CDC “who recognized the need for these funds and the importance of combating Zika here in American Samoa,”
