Residents Worry About Repeated TCF Escapes

Members of the public are concerned about news of an inmate who managed to escape from the Territorial Correctional Facility and stole a woman’s purse from a vehicle parked in front of the ASPA customer Service in Tafuna, after hours.

Police identified the suspect from a surveillance camera  and tracked him down to a nearby store along the Fagaima road.

When the suspect saw the police unit he ran to the direction of an auto shop in the vicinity and headed to the TCF through bushes behind the auto shop.

Police found him catching his breath behind the prison. It’s believed that a hole in the TCF fence is how the inmate got out.

Commissioner of Public Safety Save Liuato who has been off island for a month was unable to comment saying he has not seen any reports of incidents while he was away.

KHJ News was seeking comment from the Commissioner about the inmate’s escape.

Save ‘s response was if the incidents were really important a report would have been given to him immediately.

A second incident happened two weeks ago in front of the ASPA Customer Service Office in Tafuna, where a suspect took off with smart phones, laptops and other electronics in the back seat of a truck.

Police have yet to identify a culprit in that incident.

Members of the public are worried about inmates taking off from prison like it was a normal thing and not even a word from DPS to notify them of prisoners on the lam.

TCF senior officers meanwhile tell KHJ News that they feel like they are being neglected by the Commissioner and are treated differently from the rest of their workforce.

For example they say certain officers at the central station who have the same years of service as them, were given pay raises and not them. Another issue is non payment of overtime.

Commissioner Save told KHJ News not to trust any of those sources and said he won’t respond to anonymous sources.
