The Summer Youth Employment Program ended yesterday for 800 young men and women, bringing to a close five weeks of getting up early in the morning to catch the bus or hitch a ride to a government office or business and attending to tasks that have been laid out by their assigned mentors. The recruits of the 2016 SYEP worked four hours a day and were paid $5 an hour while they learned on the job. One of the participants, 15-year old Tauvaga Pati did more than just learn. She found herself in front of the KVZK-TV cameras, first hosting the weekly round up of news in Samoan, Maimoaga, and this week she anchored the Evening News. KVZK News Anchor Christine Faiupu explains they were short staffed due to illness and Tauvaga filled in nicely as a reporter and program host. And when they needed an anchor she rose to the plate.
