This time last year, the Troy and Theodora Polamalu Foundation awarded athletic scholarships to the camp’s most outstanding athletes,

The scholarships included an all expenses paid trip to the mainland for the athletes to be paired up with some of the coaches who were part of the Faasamoa Initiative Camp and others that the Foundation would line up.

One of the recipients Agape Mafua of Fagaitua High School departed Monday for Spokane, Washington to train with Olympic star volleyball player Allen Allen, who owns the distinction of being the only Samoan to play for the US Olympic volleyball team.

Agape was recognized as the Most Outstanding Athlete at the 2015 Fa’a Samoa Initiative Camp and won the scholarship award to train with the Volleyball Director of the camp, Allen Allen.

Coach Allen reports in an email to Fagaitua Coach Pooch Taase that Agape is doing very well at the Camp.

He said, “She did great!”

And adds, “Having girls that were in Samoa as part of our staff made Agape’s transition easier with the elite group.”

Coach Allen says Sia Poyer, head coach of eastern New Mexico University who was in Samoa with the Faa Samoa Initiative last year was visiting the workout this week to scout Agape and is very interested in offering her a scholarship.

Coach Allen says, “Thank you Polamalu Foundation for opening the door for this young women to change her family’s destiny!”
