Fono Takes Three Week Recess

fono-3

The House of Representatives did not meet the quorum to hold a session today.

Only 8 out of 21 members of the House turned up so the session was opened, a prayer was held and then it was closed again.

Vice Speaker Fetu Fetui has been presiding at the House proceedings this week in the absence of Speaker Talavou Ale, who’s a delegate to committee meetings of the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa at Kanana-fou.

Four concurrent resolutions were approved by both chambers between Monday when the session opened and today.

The measures honor the contributions of and pay tribute to the late Mr. Aleki Sene, the longest serving cabinet member in the history of the American Samoa Government, who was director of the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority,  the late Mrs Pohakalani Mauga, wife of Lt. Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga and a former faipule, the late Sealiitu Mauga.

The final resolution adjourns the Legislature for a three week recess.

According to the measure, the recess is to “preserve legislative session days for  most efficient use” and “to fully prepare for disposition of additional and in coming agenda items. ”

The Fono will be back in session on August 8.

Senate President Gaoteote Palaie and Vice Speaker Fetu Fetui , along with Senate Secretary Leoo Vaa Ma’o will be attending funeral services of Mrs Pohakalani Mauga in Honolulu next Tuesday.

Governor Lolo Moliga, First Lady Cynthia Moliga, and Secretary of Samoan Affairs Mauga Tasi Asuega will also attend.
