Captain Lemanu Says His Crew Gave Race Their All

Lt. Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga, captain of the ASG fautasi , which won their race against the Fono fautasi, says he and his crew gave it all they had,

The ASG employees, rowing the Aua fautasi Sinapioa, crossed the finish line about 3 fautasi lengths ahead of the Fono fautasi.

Lemanu said after the race they now have to pray for renewed strength to compete in tomorrow’s race.

He acknowledged the Skipper of the Fono fautasi, Speaker of the House Savali Talavou Ale and Senate President Gaoteote Palaie for a great race and the experience.

He was also thankful for the break in the weather which allowed the race to proceed after two postponements.

Lemanu told KHJ News it appears that the Fono crew was saving their strength for tomorrow’s regatta.

He noted that sea conditions were great and he knows the same holds for tomorrow.

Lemanu  thanked his crew for putting in all their might today.

Senate President Gaoteote Palaie, with several years as a fautasi captain under his belt, said it was a great race.

He said he was there to assist and encourage the Fono crew and he was proud of their efforts.

The Senate president, who captains his village Vatia’s fautasi, Fuao, said some of their  crew members were in the Fono fautasi because he wanted to give them the chance to row before tomorrow.

Four oars were broken during the race but he’s thankful that the race went well and ended without incident.

Gaoteote said the superior quality of the fautasi that the Fono is using is unparalleled and it cannot be compared to the rest of the fleet, even the Sinapioa.   

Overall, he said he’s glad the race took place and he congratulated Lt. Governor Lemanu and the executive branch for their victory.
