An unattended stove that was left on is the suspected cause of a fire which destroyed a home and store in Nuuuli yesterday afternoon.

The shell of the building is left standing but has been completely gutted along with all of the stock and contents of the store.

According to Commissioner of Public Safety Save Liuato Tuitele the DPS dispatcher received the call about the fire at 11:30 am and fire trucks stationed at Fagaitua, Fagatogo and Leone helped the Tafuna fire units put out the fire.

Nuuuli fire ruinsSave says the fire trucks arrived in reasonable time.

According to a preliminary report from the Fire Chief the fire started in the kitchen where the family had left a frying pan on the stove unattended.

The commissioner says they claimed they were cooking lunch when the blaze started and spread to the rest of the building.

The store sold and stored on site butane gas for Origin Energy and Le Afi.

People who were inside the building managed to escape unharmed.

The building belonged to former Fagatogo faipule Steve Leasiolagi and was leased to Asian tenants.
