Zika cases:10 confirmed, 271 suspected

The number of confirmed Zika cases is now 10, up from 8 early last week,.

According to a report from Department of Health Epidemiologist Scott Anesi two of the new confirmed cases are pregnant women.

This brings to 3, the number of pregnant mothers confirmed to have the zika virus.

The latest results are from off island lab testing of specimens that were sent in the second batch of blood samples.

DOH has now sent off island for lab analysis three batches of blood samples from suspected Zika cases.

The number of suspected Zika cases recorded at the LBJ Hospital; and the community health centers is 271.

Meawnhile another clean up of some of the villages with the highest number of suspected Zika cases: Leone, Iliili and Tafuna is being held today, a continuation of the clean up of last Wednesday.

Government departments and agencies have been divided into three teams and are walking the targeted villages picking up trash, removing unused appliances, roofing iron, junk vehicles and the like.

The aim is to get rid of any container, nook and cranny that mosquitoes which spread the virus can breed in.

Symptoms of Zika include fever, joint pain, redness of the eyes, rash and fatigue.
