What Pregnant Women Should Know About Zika

It’s well known that the Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes.

What’s less known is that there’s strong probability the Zika virus may also be contracted through sexual intercourse.

There have been general references to this in public awareness messages from the American Samoa Department of Health about the zika virus .

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention takes a very cautious approach in releasing information about the sexual transmission of the Zika virus basically because the center is still trying to research the disease.

Dr. Thane Hancock the CDC’s team lead for the American Samoa Zika outbreak says out of thousands and thousands of people with Zika that the center tested elsewhere, two cases were of pregnant women who contracted Zika from their husbands during sex.

Expectant mothers are the special target group in all efforts to combat Zika because it’s suspected that the virus causes deformities in babies of women who have the virus.

Such a connection has not been conclusively proven by CDC which has now begun a study in Brazil, where such cases have been reported, for scientific confirmation.

Dr. Hancock said with the information about the two cases of zika suspected to be transmitted sexually, the CDC cautions pregnant women to refrain from unprotected sex.
