Tahiti Looks to Am Samoa for Support

An island neighbor that wants to host the Pacific Games in 2023, Tahiti, has sent a campaigner to American Samoa to help win support for its bid.

Johann Hironui Bouit, Chef de mission for Tahiti’s National Olympic Committee arrived Monday night via Honolulu and has been meeting with officials of the American Samoa National Olympic Committee, the Department of Youth and Women Affairs and local sports organizations.

johann & EthanThe Tahitian emissary also has another mission. That is to add football to the Pacific Games.

To that end he held preliminary meetings during the PNG Pacific Games last year and has received support from several countries including American Samoa which he regards as the powerhouse in football in the Pacific.

Tahiti has hosted the Pacific Games twice before but lost its bid to host the 2019 Games to Tonga.

Solomon islands submitted its bid for the 2023 Games in January, but Tahiti’s Chef de mission is hopeful that they can sway support to hold the games in Papeete instead of Honiara.

Government and sports officials will hear Johann’s presentation on why Tahiti should host the Pacific Games at 2 this afternoon at the Youth Center in Pago Pago.
