A detainee who was beaten in his cell by other inmates on Friday, wasn’t taken to the hospital until nearly 24-hours later.

Niko Motu of Pago Pago was arrested Thursday evening for allegedly stealing $140 from the home of a friend he had been drinking with.

He made his first appearance in District Court on Friday morning.

According to reliable sources, when Motu returned to the Territorial Correctional Facility he was assaulted by four inmates, one of whom apparently stood guard at the door during the beating.

During visitation on Saturday morning, the man’s wife and children were at the TCF to visit him and it took awhile before the man appeared.

His left eye was black and swollen and he had scratches on his face.

Despite prison guards seeing the man’s state, there was no attempt to find out the cause, or to take him to hospital on Friday or Saturday morning.

It’s believed that the man’s family made another visit to the TCF Saturday evening and that’s when he was taken to the hospital.

Motu was arraigned in High Court this morning which is when KHJ News saw his injuries.

Relatives of the man fear for his safety due and are trying to bail him out.

He has been moved from the cell where he was detained and where he was beaten

It’s believed that the inmates who were involved in the beating are all facing charges in different cases that are interconnected.

According to our sources, a written statement by the defendant about how he used the money he allegedly stole, implicates the inmates who beat him or other family members.
