ASTCA Hearing Delayed Due to Board Chaiman’s Travels

The Samoana students who spoke with KHJ News today said they also don’t have enough text books and some books are missing pages.

One of the four admitted the students don’t take care of the text books.

The four Samoana Sharkies said they support the demonstration but they are not taking part because they should be in class.

There were about 50 Samoana students at the demonstration at the Fagatogo malae this morning.

Close to 100 people, took part including high school and American Samoa Community College students, teachers, government employees, retirees, a business owner and mothers and fathers.

They were protesting a bill to increase the Fono leaders and members salaries by $20,000.

Though it was planned for 6 am to 8:30 about six members continued their protest under the hot sun past 11 am. Another demonstration is planned for Thursday beginning at 6am.

A hearing by the Senate on the request by the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority for a loan from the Retirement Fund that was scheduled for Thursday has been cancelled.

The hearing on the ASTCA request has been postponed to Monday of next week.

The chairman of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee Senator Laolagi Vaeao had cancelled his committee’s discussion of the Fono salary bill planned for Thursday to allow the hearing with ASTCA.

He did not make any announcement today on whether their review will take place now that the ASTCA hearing has been postponed to Monday.

Two senators whom KHJ News spoke with today said even before today’s demonstration they would not support the bill because it lacks a funding source and because it’s the wrong time.
