Delay in release of MWPC checks 07/30/2010 The Disbursing Office began distributing Making Work Pay Credit checks later than usual yesterday and the distribution was still continuing after 6 pm.
Tax Office Manager Melvin Joseph said there were some differences in numbers between the Tax Office and Disbursing which caused the delay.
He said they needed to balance the files before the checks were issued and for some reason their numbers didn’t correspond with the check amounts.
1,340 checks were released yesterday with a total value of $473,000.
A major complaint since the first checks came out last week is why some are being asked to provide a letter verifying their employment and income when the Tax Office had only asked for a check stub and photo ID.
The Tax Office Manager has clarified that they are asking for verification letters in cases where the employees' check stubs don’t show year to date wages.
He said some NEG and Census Office employees as well as former employees of Samoa Packing, have only worked for one month so they need additional verification from employers.
The total amount released in Making Work Pay Credit checks is $2.08 million.
