ASPA issues boil water notice

07/30/2010

The American Samoa Power Authority is urging residents utilizing the central water system to boil their water before using it.

Areas affected are Pava’ia’i starting from the Bank of Hawaii all the way to the Fagaima access road.

Villages included in this area are Malaeimi, Mesepa, Faleniu, Aoloau and A’asu. The notice also affects Ili’ili, beginning from the Assembly of God church in Iliili heading eastward to Leloaloa, ending at the Uti Guest House.

All of the villages in between these points are asked to boil their water.

ASPA says a source site in the ASG Central system was detected with fecal indicators. These are microbes whose presence indicate that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes.

Specifically, a well in the Fagaima Well Field tested positive for total choliform and E-coli.

ASPA says it’s taking necessary steps to resolve the problem with these wells.

The utility urges residents in the affected areas not to drink the water without boiling it first.

Residents with compromised immune systems, or infants and elderly individuals are at an increased risk and should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
