Will Another Country Replace US in Tuna Deal?

The Pacific island countries which are members of the US Pacific Tuna Treaty will be meeting in Vanuatu in a few weeks to discuss the next step In reaching a deal with the United States,

At the last round of negotiations in Fiji last week, the US and Pacific island parties were no where close to coming to an agreement.

The US managed to force the Pacific island parties to reduce license fees and fishing days under the treaty that’s now in place.

But that temporary agreement ends in December.

After the latest round of talks in Fiji there are indications that the Paicifc island countries may not be amenable to giving in to US conditions for a new treaty,

In an interview with Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat Program, Mr. James Movick, Director General of the Forum Fisheries Agency, which overseas the US Pacific Tuna Treaty, was asked about the possibility that other countries may fill the revenue strean that the US deal provided for Pacific Island Parties.
