Tuna with lemon and spicy tuna are among the varieties of Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) that StarKist Samoa is producing for the US military.

StarKist needs to meet stringent requirements in order to be a supplier of MREs for the military.

At the Flag Day Trade Fair which opened at Suiga ula o le Atuvasa on Monday, Starkist Samoa displayed the MRE tuna pouches produced at the Satala cannery.

There were even samples of the product for members of the public to try.

Mr Andrew Choe, President and CEO of StarKist, said at a press conference during his recent visit, tuna in the pouch is becoming more popular than tuna in the can  in the US marketplace.

Mr. Choe said StarKist cannot increase pouch production at the local plant because of limited space at Satala.

The cannery has asked the government for space close to the plant that it can build cold storage facilities and also expand the plant.

In other news , StarKist will be shutdown for scheduled maintenance from April 16 to the 23rd.

Taotasi Archie Soliai, who handles community relations for StarKist Samoa, says management and employees will participate in the Flag Day parade on Monday.

StarKist has marched in the Flag Day parade for the last few years and whenever it participates it is by far the largest group in the parade with about 2,000 employees.
