The American Samoa Triathlon, in conjunction with Samoa Prosthetics and South Pacific Watersports & Fitness held “TRI for your LIFE Triathlon” Saturday.

According to co-founder Joe Tavale of Samoa Prosthetics, this was the greatest turnout since the triathlon began three years ago.

He thinks the number of participants tripled this year.

This year, South Pacific Watersports & Fitness joined AS Triathlon to support the growing event and promote health & fitness throughout the community.

South Pacific Watersports & Fitness owner Michael McDonald said, “It was a privilege to join in on the effort and support what AS Triathlon has started. Matt Bracken, Joe Tavale and Sandy Scanlan have been doing this all by themselves so it was important to us to collaborate and support the efforts to develop the event and sport.

“It was particularly great to see a large number of young people compete. In fact, one of the 3 competitors to take on the Olympic triathlon was 14-year old Seamus Cleary, son of Dr. Patricia Cleary at LBJ.”

Also joining in on the effort to support the triathlon this year as a major sponsor was the ASG Department of Health.

DOH Director Motusa Nua and the DOH staff came out in force providing water, fruit, t-shirts, first aid, and moral support for the participants.

DOH also sponsored the promotion of the event, increasing the visibility of the triathlon, which had a direct impact on the increased participation.
