A phone company in Samoa has a new plan to help prevent violence among young people due to comments on social media platforms.
This week Samoa joins 20 other countries around the Pacific to push awareness on cyber safety. Students are the main target for this year’s campaign and the Police ministry is reminding that cyber crime is illegal
Be Smart on Line for a better future is the theme of this year’s campaign and phone company Digicel Samoa is on board with stringent policies on the sale of mobile phones to the younger population.
Offenders of cyber crime in Samoa are serving jail sentences and there’s been one case where the loss of a life has been traced to comments on Face Book.
A spokesman for Digicel Samoa says they will not sell a cell phone to a minor without their parents consent.
Commissioner of Public Fuiavailili Egon Keil launched the police ministry’s FaceBook page as part of the week long event.
