Participants of the Summer Youth Employment Program, students currently studying on ASG scholarships, as well as college graduates who are employed under the Governor’s Apprenticeship Program all came together this morning for the opening of this year’s Summer Youth Employment Program.

800 young men and women will be introduced to various jobs in the government and private sector.

They will receive minimum wages for four hours of work five days a week, for 7 weeks.

The SYEP is administered by the Department of Human Resources.

Director Lei Sonny Thompson welcomed the youth, Rev. Faafetai Fuimaono of the Malaeloa CCCAS, the governor.

Congresswoman Aumua Amata, Secretary of Samoan Affairs and directors who attended.

Lei recounted that a priority of Governor Lolo is creating learning and job opportunities for young people.

This is why he created the apprenticeship program… to employ scholarship students who’ve returned home with degrees, and increasing job slots in the Summer Youth Employment Program.

Governor Lolo told the SYEP participants aside from earning a paycheck that their families would appreciate, their summer jobs would equip them with skills that they can use well into the future.
