The highest official in charge of the US Pacific territories at the National Marine Fisheries Service, the arm of NOAA which handles fisheries regulations like the Large Vessel Prohibited Area, (LVPA)  is in the territory this week.

Regional Administrator for the Pacific Area, Michael Tosatto, is attending tonight’s Listening Session to map out coastal and marine spatial planning for American Samoa.

This is part of the Service’s efforts to gather input from the areas that are under its jurisdictions for a plan that will be a roadmap for fisheries development, conservation and management in the future.

The group conducting the session this evening at Sadies by the Sea conference room is the Pacific Islands Regional Planning Body.

The session is from 5 to 7pm and the public is encouraged to attend.

One of the most common complaints government leaders and opponents of US regulations on fisheries have made against the NMFS is that it doesn’t consult with the people affected by its rules.

Tonight’s meeting is your chance to make an input.
