Polls have closed in Samoa and counting has begun for the country’s general election.

There are 164 candidates standing, with almost half being members of the ruling Human Rights Protection Party.

Four candidates, including the caretaker Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, are running unopposed in their constituencies.

Reports from Apia say there was a large turnout at polling stations, with some people waiting hours to vote, sometimes past the closing time of 3 o’clock.

Media say the election appears to have gone smoothly, with no reports of irregularities.

Results should start coming into the Election Office by 6 pm our time and the full results should be known by 9 pm our time.

Southseas Broadcasting Inc, in association with Samoa’s Talamua Media, will be airing coverage of Samoa’s general elections on V103 Radio beginning after our 5pm news.
