Nursing students at the American Samoa Community College are praying that the governor will continue financial assistance that has helped them with tuition, book fees and other expenses for their studies.

The financial assistance of about $1,000 is usually given at the start of the semester but parents of some of the students told Khj News they’ve been told that the funding will not be continued.

Director of the Nursing Program at ASCC Lele Ah Mu said they are trying to get a meeting with Governor Lolo Moliga to explain to him how important this assistance is to the students.

She said only a few students will be able to continue their studies with the help of their families, but for most, they cannot afford to pay their tuition and book fees.

Ah Mu said the nursing program at ASCC, will be jeopardized without this funding.

The students have to pass their courses in order to receive the stipend and they also have to commit to working in the territory after their studies.

Ms Ah Mu said this is the only way that they are able to retain nursing graduates and stop them from migrating off island where they would earn much higher salaries.

Ah Mu was hoping to be able to have a meeting with the governor before the week is over but she said she was having difficulty getting a confirmed date from Lolo’s secretary.
