The number of pregnant women confirmed to have contracted the Zika virus has jumped to 12 after holding steady at 6 for several weeks.

According to the latest report issued by Department of Health Epidemiologist Scott Anesi, there are now 654 suspect cases  and 23 confirmed cases of Zika.

Ituau District has the highest attack rate of Zika, 16.0 % per 1,000 people.

54% of the suspected Zika cases are women and the age group that are most affected is the 10 and under.

Teams from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working with the Department of Health in response, prevention and distribution of Zika kits for the target group, pregnant mothers.

Meanwhile as we reported last week, the University of Hawaii is including in a vaccine study for the Zika virus the case of a pregnant mother who contracted Zika from the territory.
